Connection Between Yoga and Dance

Yoga and dance share fascinating connections and intertwine from both from a historical/ cultural standpoint and beyond.

  • Tradition

    • Many forms of Indian classical dance and the practice of yoga are all steeped in hindu, buddhist, and jain lore. Dancers serve as storytellers, expressing various tales through their graceful movements. These tales inspire the names, themes, and practices in yoga.

    • Authors like Dr. Raj Balkaran and Devdutt Pattanaik have an impeccable way of writing about their concepts in their books.

      • For instance, growing up my favorite dances were those depicting stories of lord Shiva, who plays a central role in both yoga and dance.

  • Yogic Roots and Guru-Shishya Tradition:

    • Yoga and dance are traditionally taught within a guru-shishya (mentor-disciple) tradition. This sacred relation involves initiation, commitment, and dedication over many years.

      • For instance, Lord Shiva, revered as the first (Adi) yogi, transmitted aspects of yoga to seven sages (Saptarishis) who then spread this knowledge globally. Sage Patanjali, the author of the Yoga Sutras, was also inspired by a divine encounter with Lord Shiva.

  • Embodiment and Union

    • Dance allows me to experience union with my self through artistic immersion and sharing it with others.

    • The practice of yoga offers me introspection and unveiling of different layers of self-awareness leading to spiritual union

    • Both paths lead to a deeper understanding and connection to our own selves.
